Stripe-y spring top

Hooray for spring tops. I've really enjoyed watching all the entries pop up on the Flikr pool this week. Here's my first entry.

I made my own pattern based on a t-shirt I already owned. Risky business but this time it worked for me. I bought the knit fabric for $3.50 a meter last week.

The only drawback is that the knit is quite thin so I have to wear a camisole underneath. Other than that is fits my top criteria of simple, casual, work appropriate and above all --comfortable.

Proof I have a face.

I'm almost finished my second entry so it should be up sometime later this week. Happy Sewing everyone!!!

House coat

I'm such a tardy blogger. I made the Sewing for Boys housecoat over a month ago. The fabric is an old flannel sheet my mother in law was going to throw away. She knows to check with me first on these things and I happily rescued it. Didn't everyone have these sheets at one time? They remind me of that infamous hospital blanket that every newborn in every hospital seems to get wrapped up in.

It wasn't until I read Meg's post that I realized what had happened with the front pieces. You do indeed need to attach them together before cutting out your fabric. As I was sewing I kept waiting for the moment it would come together, where I'd have a magical pocket unfold but it never did and then slowly it all started to make sense. I kind of matched up the stripe--but not really.

One change I did make was to sew the belt directly onto the back of the coat. This way it won't get lost and there won't be that endless tug of war with the strap being too long on one side, too short on the other.

Loo likes it because it makes him "cozy". He also thinks it's hilarious to have a coat for in the house. Beri is madly in love with it. Every time it comes down off the hook she dive bombs it and makes me bundle her up in it. Perhaps she had these sheets in another life!

Hmmmm, what else is new?  Spring Tops!

I have 1 1/2 completed and I'm just waiting to take pictures. I even wore one to work this week and I blended right in with the rest of my business casually dressed co-workers. I attempted my third last night. Tired and cranky sewing is never a good idea and I messed up two attempts at a Wiksten tank (which seem to be the most popular pattern right now over on the Flikr pool). Leave it to me to not be able to sew a simple pattern.

I'm also stinkin' excited for KCWC. I'm making a mental list of my Loo and Beri's spring clothing needs. I'm starting to seriously consider rain coats but that might be a bit over ambitious. Anyone out there ever sewn a rain coat?

Bathing suit

We've been doing a lot of swimming on the weekends. The other morning when I asked Beri if she'd had any dreams she said "Swim........mommy." I've never bought her a bathing suit, she wore a hand me down yellow bikini and when that was too small I bought her one from the dollar store! Since I'm cheap and I sew I decided Saturday morning to make her a new suit.

I studied up on all Katy's tutorials over at No Big Dill, then got to work. I traced Beri's dollar store suit and changed the neckline. I didn't have any of the bathing suit elastic stuff so I used the swimsuit material binding for all the edges- neckline, and leg holes. I realize as I type with my coffee in the dark at 6:30 am before the kids wake up that I didn't get a good picture of the leg holes. They're up to your imagination. I also decided the make straps I could tie mostly because she was sleeping and on her old suit I used to have to tie a big knot in the straps at the back because they were too long.

My double needle and I are becoming fast friends. Between it and the walking foot I received for Christmas I fear knits no more. It's too bad the one double needle I have won't work with the walking foot... I need one where the needles are closer together. If you're on the fence about a double needle--go get one.

I'm already dreaming of her next suit. Some ruffles perhaps? The biggest hurrah came when I tried it on her and it fit her and her swim diaper. Which reminds me, today I've gotta go sign them up for swimming lessons.....

A dress for Beri and her baby

Beri's dress is the Tee for Two pattern. I even did the exposed seams this time.

Baby got a LBB Sweet A-Line dress.

An added bonus to matching dresses is it's dramatically increased the popularity of the home sewn doll.

Happy Tuesday!
